On May 2nd, as part of our Inquiry Based Learning, we went to Mt. Tenpai which lies in the area of Chikushino, the local area of Linden Hall High School.
At an altitude of 254.7 metres, Mt. Tenpai received its name in the early Heian period from the actions of Sugiwara no Michizane. After the Shotai Incident, Sugiwara no Michizane was demoted and sent to Dazaifu. However, determined to prove his innocence, Sugiwara no Michizane climbed to the mountain's peak several times in order to gaze upon the heavens. It is said that from these actions the mountain was given the name Mount Tenpai, or 'heaven venerating'.
At approximately half past 9, our students from grades 7 to 11 arrived at the base,
and embarked on the "route of bettering fortune".
From the start of the route until the peak of the mountain, several stones can be found upon which are inscribed the poetry that Michizane recited upon the mountain,
which the students used to check and engage in gap-filling activities.
With very fortunate weather on the day, the students were able to enjoy clear skies and a fantastic view far into the distance.
On the way down from the mountain, the students, with their classes, drew sketches,
and enjoyed lunchtime at the base.
Afterwards, we made visits to Buzoji Temple and Gojisaku Tenmangu, rounding out the days activities.
The high school is scheduled to engage in Inquiry Based Learning in the local area, consisting of Dazaifu and Chikushino.
We hope that everyone can learn much about this storied region.
