Since the establishment of the school, we have set up the “Environmental Studies” subject. Linden Hall School provides an English immersion programme and the environmental studies course is taught in English, as we are designated a Specially Exempt School. Our school has various learning opportunities to experience aspects of the real world. Like beach cleaning in relation to learning about marine issues and also to understand about issues such as“food loss”through Shokuiku (Food and Nutrition Education). We believe our school is a place where students can learn about the environment with curiosity.
Students compost vegetables and fruit skins from school lunches for growing vegetables at the school’s farm. These efforts are also an opportunity to gain an understanding of the recycling-based system, to foster the wisdom of using all the ingredients and to understand the preciousness of food and to raise awareness of environmental and food loss issues. In addition to that, providing organic lunches contributes to reducing the soil load.
View moreStudents plant, grow and learn how to harvest rice at the rice paddies located within school grounds. The harvested rice straw is then burned to ash, glazed, and used to make tea bowls. Students also have an experience of making “decorations of sacred straw rope” for new year with the harvested rice straw. Through this series of activities, students will understand the recycling-base system for life in Japan and learn about the ancient culture of using rice to its fullest potential and cherishing things in the environment.
Rice CroppingIn Art lessons, recycling paper is used to make Christmas tree decorations and for making props for the annual school Shakespeare production, students use recycled materials as much as possible.
Our PE uniform is made from 95% polyester and 5% cotton. More than 50% of the polyester material is made from recycled plastic bottles and contributes to resource conservation and reducing CO2. Students also collect used PE uniforms and participate in our initiative called “BRING PROJECT” that makes recycling polyester clothing a semi-permanent part of the school year.
Elementary school students grow fast and very soon their uniforms become too small for them. Parents run “Second Hands Uniform” at our school and sell used uniforms that have become too small to the next grade level students at lower prices.
Untouched primeval forests have a variety of trees which are suitable for the particular conditions of the native land and it is necessary to protect the natural habitat. At our school, we saved the primeval forest in the grounds to teach students about the richness of nature and the importance of protecting our environment through observing the plants and playing in the forest.
Bag handles are made from textured paper. Everything including the handle and the bag itself are made of paper, therefore it is 100% recyclable. The material used is “FSC certified paper” which is recognized worldwide as a highly trusted system from the Forest Stewardship Council. By adopting the recognized paper, we treasure the forests, people and living creatures around those areas for future generations.
Besides using“FSC certified paper”, we adopt a printing method which does not discharge harmful liquid waste“printing without water (butterfly mark)”which also contributes to protecting our environment.
Since the establishment of Linden Hall School, we have been teaching Environmental Studies as an important part of the curriculum, which is necessary in our society to be working on environmental issues with a global perspective. It seems that our ongoing environmental education and the aims of SDGs have many overlapping areas. We think that we need to consider various environmental issues on a global scale. Therefore, in order to be conscious about our environment day by day and keep learning about it, students wear SDG badges.
We work on different kinds of activities regarding the environment which are shown above. Our school also declares to put energy conservation and resource conservation into action in order to prevent global warming. For the declaration, we received an Eco-School Certification from Fukuoka Prefecture.
