G11 School Trip to Singapore and Malaysia

Nov 22, 2023

Grade 11 students traveled to Singapore and Malaysia for 5 days, from 11/14-11/18. The first day was spent visiting the Merlion Park in Singapore and exploring the area near their hotel in the evening.

Day 2 began at the Gardens by the Bay where they viewed exhibits about conservation efforts, plants from around the world, and art made from reclaimed materials. Not only did they learn more about the natural world from a biology perspective, but also from an artistic perspective.

The afternoon was spent at the NEWater Visitor Centre. They participated in an English guided tour to learn about Singapore’s water treatment system and water sustainability. They also gained highly specialized knowledge about the movement of water molecules and osmotic pressure.

Afterwards, at the Marina Barrage, students learned about freshwater storage, recreation, and flood management. Coming from a country with many natural disasters, our students thought about the future of Japan’s public utilities and freshwater management facilities.

The third day was spent touring international neighborhoods- Little India, the historic Muslim Quarter, and Chinatown. Experiencing many forms of transportation and visiting prayer at a mosque, students reflected on the value of multiculturalism and coexisting within a society with diverse value systems.

On day 4, they traveled to Johor Bahru, Malaysia, for a cultural exchange with students at Kolej Vokasional (ERT) Azizah. Malaysian students taught our students traditional games and dances, helped try on traditional garments, and even shared a home cooked breakfast. Linden Hall students shared a presentation on Fukuoka and Dazaifu and gifted Hakataori souvenirs, which were met with great enthusiasm from the Malaysian students!

The evening was spent on a night safari, where students saw many animals and learned about conservation efforts to protect habitats, endangered species, and biodiversity.

Singapore is a relatively young country at just 58 years since independence, but students were able to experience both rich diversity and innovative global leadership during their visit. In just 5 days, students showed great growth both as individuals and as a class unit. They are coming back with many valuable new perspectives and experiences- we are excited to see how they use them to grow as leaders in their community!
